WHEREAS, Ohio has long been a pioneer in the realm of school choice.
From the first convening of the Governor’s Commission on Educational
Choice in 1991, the message has been clear to Ohio’s parents; you do
have a choice in finding the best education for your children; and

WHEREAS, The Cleveland Scholarship and Tutoring Program, which began
in 1995, was among the first in the nation to offer a private school
tuition voucher to students in a struggling urban district. Today,
that program serves over 5,200 students; and

WHEREAS, Ohio created a system of charter/community schools in 1997,
giving parents statewide brand new options for education without
tuition and very few barriers to access. Today, over 325 schools
serving over 88,000 students are in operation throughout the state;
and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOHN R. KASICH, Governor of the State of Ohio, do
hereby proclaim January 24 through January 29, 2011 as SCHOOL CHOICE
WEEK in the state of Ohio, and I call this observance to the attention
of all our citizens.

How in the hell did Martin Luther King, III amass enough money to
consider buying a stake in the Mets?

Martin Luther King III invoked the spirit of his late father as he
confirmed his involvement in discussions to purchase a part of the New
York Mets.

In a late-night statement released to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
on Sunday, King said that he hoped that the venture, if successful,
would increase diversity among the owners in professional sports.

Major league baseball has no African-American owners.

“I believe in the merit and American value of creating an example,”
King said in the statement, “and if I personally, or as part of a
collective, can advance the vision of a more diverse ownership group
in professional sports, domestically or internationally, then, like my
father, I am prepared to act in that spirit.”


Where is he getting the money? Not only that, but if he and his
friends have enough deep pockets to pull this off, why is the King
Center in such bad shape?

Law vs Justice

The law states your children must attend the public schools in the
area you live if you don't send them to private school, no matter how
bad the school system is.

The prosecutor states it is a felony to file false documentation to
support you live in an area which you do not so that your children can
attend a safe school system. That is the law.

The jury convicts the mother on the charges. That is the law. I would
have not voted for conviction because of the situation. In other
words, I would have nullified and in this case, this is justice.

The judge sentenced the mother to a few years. That's the law.
Complaints caused the judge to reduce it to 10 days. That's justice,
sort of. Justice would have been giving her time serve and if she
graduated college and had not gotten into any trouble, her record
would be expunged.

To "Law And Order" Conservatives

To the "law and order" conservatives with whom I argued with you
concerning the asinine policy of "Broken Windows" policing, I offer
you the following quote:

The arguments were furthered in a book entitled "The Corner" that was
published three years later. After a new election cycle, however,
those arguments were ignored in favor of years of "zero tolerance" of
minor street crimes and an obsession with street-level drug
enforcement that actually de-emphasized quality police work and led to
marked declines in arrest rates for major felonies.

Later, when a mayor sought to become governor using public safety as
an issue, the same police department went further down the path,
emphasizing widespread street arrests of dubious quality and legality.
This did not reduce crime so much as it violated the civil rights of
many city residents and led to the widespread alienation of
our jury pool, with many city jurors no longer willing to trust the
integrity of testifying officers — a problem that will plague
Baltimore law enforcement for years.

The part I emphasized is something I stated, strongly, in my arguments
and continue to state today. So, again I ask, what say you?

Ted Williams, the former homeless man with the
incredibly golden voice, left skid marks at the Texas drug
rehabilitation center that he originally agreed to go into, according
to media reports.

While most will believe that Williams quit because he just wanted to
get his high on, sources said Williams was appalled that Dr.
Phil had installed cameras and lighting equipment in the facility to
record Williams’ rehab process. Williams believed that he was being
made to be part of some reality show farce and that he was
strong-armed by Dr. Phil into going into that particular rehab
facility in the first place.

I KNOW Oprah isn't responsible for what "Dr. Phil" does at this point,
but I think she should feel she has a moral responsibility to
straighten this mess out as much as she can.

"Dr. Phil" isn't good enough to feast off the walls of my uncleaned intestines.

The B-W corridor has been lucky with the snow fall not being as much as predicted. We are going to get one good one I think. Meanwhile, the 1 year old snow blower won't start.

If The GOP Was Serious

If the Republicans were serious, instead of voting to repeal the entire heath care law, they would have sent up separate bills to repeal the portions of the heath care law they don't like, for example the mandatory requirements.

The Nuclear Bomb Is Armed and Time Is Almost Up

The pension system is in trouble, in general, but it's the public pension system that is going to cause the most widespread damage.

US public pensions face a shortfall of $2,500 billion that will force state and local governments to sell assets and make deep cuts to services, according to the former chairman of New Jersey’s pension fund.

The severe US economic recession has cast a spotlight on years of fiscal mismanagement, including chronic underfunding of retirement promises.

“States face cost pressure, most prominently from retirement benefits and Medicaid [the health programme for the poor],” Orin Kramer told the Financial Times.

“One consequence is that asset sales and privatisation will pick up. The very unfortunate consequence is that various safety nets for the most vulnerable citizens will be cut back.”

I don't think there is much that can be done unless the terms of the pensions are drastically changed for future AND current pensioners.

Words Have No Power

With the conservative media all saying strong rhetoric does not cause people to do criminal acts, such as going on a killing spree, I have to wonder something. Will members of that same media now stop blaming Al Sharpton for the nutcase who set the fire at Freddy's Fashion Mart which killed people?

To me, today means doors were unbarred by a lot of people, known and unknown, and people were provided the opportunity to walk through and do their thing. I'm on the broad shoulders of my family and I pray others are able to stand on mine.

Huck Finn

You know what?

The use of nigger in the Huckleberry Finn book was VITAL to the
abolition movement. That book needs to be read with the understanding
of the time period in which it was written. If this book is to be read
in school, and I think it should, then it should be read in concert
with American history of the time period.

Substituting "slave" for nigger, in this book, is way beyond political
correctness and asinine.

People need to be smacked when they complain about the book and the
publisher needs to be told how stupid they are for doing it.

Nice Story, But Are His Demons Conquered?

The story of the homeless man with the radio voice, Ted Williams, is all over the Internet and news channels. It really shows promise as a story about failure because of alcohol and drugs and a rise because of prayer and a drive to show his mother, before she passes, he is back on track. He appears to be successful in marketing himself, even though he is down. But I have to ask, why was he still homeless?

Many people are homeless because they have mental health problems. Many people are homeless because they have substance abuse problems, and that can be a result of the mental health problems. Many people are poor because their financial situation, not due to drugs and alcohol, became dire.

Ted Williams said he fell to the demons of alcohol and drugs. But is that situation "solved" or to put another way, is he in recovery? Before businesses offer him compensation for Williams' vocal talents, they should make sure his demons are under his heel. They need to ask, "Are your demons conquered"? And they need to verify.
