I was talking with my daughter yesterday, and she mentioned someone who had no sense of humor. She then said "even I" have a sense of humor, it's just hard to categorize. She said it's "different" and then she said it's "dry." When I told Mrs. D.S., she laughed and said her mother taught her how to be polite.
So, I know that was a slam, but that leads me to this post.
Best comedy routine, EVER: "Who's On First" by Abbott and Costello.
Best comedy movie, EVER: "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World". Spencer Tracy was the perfect straight man for everyone else in this movie: Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Buddy Hackett, Mickey Rooney, Phil Silvers, Jonathan Winters, Jim Backus, etc. Straight up hil-ar-ri-us!
So far, the best comedians of all time, in no particular order, but on any day I could say any one of these people are/were the best:
- George Carlin -- Irreverent or topical or "angry" it doesn't matter. The man is just funny. The 2 of his top routines that come to mind are "Stuff"
and "The 7 Dirty Words". OK, it's full of "dirty words" but it's funny.
- Jonathan Winters -- Only one person matches his energy, improvisation, and wacky physical movements. And that person was mentored by Jonathan Winters.
- Robin Williams -- He is the best at improvisation that I have even seen, next to Jonathan Winters. I saw a show where he was on stage with Billy Crystal and 2 other comedians. Robin Williams started things off and the nameless 2 comedians tried to hang but quickly gave up. That left Robin Williams and Billy Crystal. Crystal, to his credit, hung in there and the improvisation between the two was outstanding. But even then, Crystal just feed into the mania of Robin Williams.
- Dick Gregory -- Political and social commentary of the day, turns it around and makes it funny while making a point aligned to his world view.
- Redd Foxx -- I was one of those who "snuck" a listen to his blue recordings and they were funny.
- Richard Pryor -- nuff said.
I don't consider my humor dry, but I do like puns, especially BAD puns.
