This is in response to Duane, the Black Informant.
If I had the power, this is what I would do in Louisiana concerning public policy.
Public Safety
- Anyone convicted of a crime and sentenced to jail during a time-span of 10 years from now, would not be eligible for parole. If the sentencing guidelines state a conviction for crime X is 5 to 10 years, and the judge sentences the person to 7 years, the person does 7 years.
- Any crime committed with a gun automatically gets tried in federal court.
- Everyone in jail has to work on public projects to clean up the mess left after Katrina.
Economic Development
- All companies wholly incorporated, owned, and operated in Louisiana get tax breaks for 10 years. The breaks should include 50% cut in corporate taxes, 50% cut in property taxes on the company's headquarters, and sales tax exemptions for goods purchased from other Louisiana companies. All tax breaks must be paid back by the company and those financially responsible for the company (CEO, COO, CFO) if the company is found to be in violation of Louisiana laws intended to spur economic development.
- Companies get breaks for employing Louisiana residents who lived in Louisiana for at least 3 years prior to Katrina.
Public Housing/Public Assistance
- Anyone on public assistance before Katrina, and returns and wants to get on public assistance again, has to get a job in 30 days. After that, it runs out in 90 days. If you leave the state before then, you are obligated to pay it all back, with interest.
- Anyone in public housing will be removed from public housing if any family member living in the public housing is convicted of a crime.
