African American Self-Help Foundation

African American Self-Help Foundation was founded in 1981 on the principles that each life is of infinite value to God and that we have both the opportunity and the responsibility to affirm that value through our actions.

For the past two and a half decades, we have been working to help others overcome difficulty and achieve lives of dignity and value. Our focus is on children of African descent, whether here in the US through our work with the children of single mothers, or on the African continent, through our work with AIDS orphans, education and community health and development.

As Dr. King put it, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" Like the Good Samaritan in our story, in choosing to stop and help another, we also define and expand the value of our own lives.

African American Self-Help Foundation is a member of the Samaritan Group, a coalition of organizations on four continents, all of which share a common passion to save the world -- one child at a time. These entities are committed to coordinating their resources and efforts in order to achieve maximum results and efficiency. We frequently collaborate on projects and aid shipments in order to save on costs. This lowers overhead and therefore provides greater leverage for your donation dollar.

100 Black Men's Back to School Picnic A Hit

Al Studesville watched the children and teenagers, some as young as 4 or 5 years old, mill about Demetral Field Saturday afternoon at the 100 Black Men's Back to School Picnic, each carrying a brand-new backpack filled with school supplies.

"The backpacks are almost as big as they are," he said, laughing.

Studesville is one of the original members of the Madison chapter of the organization, which promotes leadership and improvement among the city's African-American community. Besides the annual picnic, the group provides tutoring and mentoring for students and organizes events such as an annual gala, a golf outing and an African American History Challenge Bowl that quizzes local teens on black history and provides scholarships to winning teams for a trip to the national event.

Studesville said the idea for the backpack giveaway came from members who participated in the tutoring program, who soon learned that many children who they taught did not have enough supplies for school. Every year since 1996, the organization has given away hundreds of free backpacks filled with school supplies such as notebooks, folders, rulers, markers and pencils to children of all ages and races at the event.

Real Men Charities, Inc. is the national not-for-profit organization that presents the Real Men Cook® events. Real Men Charities, Inc. was organized to add value to Father's Day and activities that honor men who serve as examples of responsibility to families, to prevent cruelty to children, to establish, equip, maintain and operate playgrounds for children, to further by clinical study, laboratory research, publication and teaching the knowledge of diseases including Lupus, Sickle Cell Anemia, Diabetes and other diseases afflicting African Americans and other minorities.

The mission of The Twenty-First Century Foundation (21CF) is to advance strategic Black philanthropy.

In 1971, when Robert Browne, founder of The Twenty-First Century Foundation, gave the grant making institution its name, many people thought it was far ahead of its time. Not just because of the futuristic ring to it – Twenty-First Century, but because Browne’s depth of vision led him to establish an endowment, as the cornerstone of a permanent, renewable resource for Black community initiative. But now, the future is here, and many realize that a Black-led and governed grant making organization is an idea whose time has come – and it's now.

After being drafted to the NFL by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1997, Warrick established a program called “Homes for the Holidays” as an effort to keep his mother's dream of homeownership alive through other single mothers working hard to provide for their families.

"Homes for the Holidays" assists single mothers in owning their first home by providing the down payment on a house and then filling the house with everything a first-time homeowner would need including: furniture, food, linens, lawn mower, gardening supplies, washer, dryer, dishes, pots and pans, etc. This program is the primary focus of the Warrick Dunn Foundation and to date has assisted 45 single mothers and 120 children in Atlanta, GA, Baton Rouge, LA and Tampa, FL.

National Black United Fund

The mission of the National Black United Fund is to build a viable philanthropic institution for Black American opportunity, growth, and change. Our strategy is to use philanthropic resources to meet vital needs in Black communities, and to use those resources as venture capital to leverage social and economic change. NBUF raises funds for and provides technical assistance to Black organizations that provide a wide variety of services to Black Americans in the areas of children, health, education, equal opportunity, economic development, the environment, and social justice.

Associated Black Charities is a federation of 20 member agencies that deliver health and human services in the five boroughs of New York City. Services include basic needs such as meals for the elderly, shelter for the homeless, medical and mental health services, emergency food and shelter, protective care for children and families who are at risk, counseling for those who are troubled and rehabilitation for substance abusers.
