Our strategy is to use philanthropic resources to meet vital needs in Black communities, and to use those resources as venture capital to leverage social and economic change. Associated Black Charities

Associated Black Charities is a federation of 20 member agencies that deliver health and human services in the five boroughs of New York City. Services include basic needs such as meals for the elderly, shelter for the homeless, medical and mental health services, emergency food and shelter, protective care for children and families who are at risk, counseling for those who are troubled and rehabilitation for substance abusers.

What is Black Professional Men, Inc.? Black Professional Men, Inc. (BPM) is a nonprofit organization based in Baltimore, Maryland and established in 1991 to address the social, economic and political awareness needs of the African-American community, especially those of the African-American male. Why do we exist?

 

• Statistics on our community weigh heavily on the negative side. Whereas, the positive images go unnoticed or are given a small portion on the last page of the newspaper.
• According to reports, African-Americans have $400 billion in purchasing power. However, that $400 billion purchasing power leaves the African-American community; thereby, creating economic empowerment for other communities.
• There are many laws and legislation enacted that directly affect the African-American community. However, many African Americans are not involved in the political process.

An awareness of social, economic, and political issues empower the African-American community. Through our efforts, these issues are addressed.

The Harlem YMCA Black Achievers in Industry (BAI) Mentor Program is a citywide program that recruits Black Achievers who are employed by Fortune 500 corporations to serve as role models to 50 high school students annually in a one-to-one relationship.

The Mentor Program was founded in 1988 to match BAI alumni with middle school and high school students in hopes of creating future black leaders.

The Tutor/Mentor Connection (T/MC) mission is: To gather and organize all that is known about successful non-school tutor/mentor programs and share that knowledge to expand the availability and enhance the effectiveness of these services to children in inner city Chicago and other poverty areas.

This mission is accomplished through a four-part strategy. 1) It aims to increase knowledge about what works, where programs are located and where more are needed. 2) It aggressively shares this knowledge in a marketing and public awareness campaign aimed at 3) creating a greater involvement of all adults, and a greater flow of essential resources to individual programs; and a 4) better understanding among all stakeholders of the long-term, integrated actions needed to help children and youth move from a birth in poverty to a job and a career. For each child this is a minimum 25-year commitment.

Sister Moms

From the inception in November 1999, Sistermoms has been an informal group of African-American mothers who have gathered to discuss their issues and concerns, expand their own personal and professional networks, support, and learn from one another. Since that time, we have grown from a small, tight-knit group of nine women to an email community of over 150 African American women. Most of us are from the Washington, DC metro area, but we have Sistermoms in California, Michigan, Connecticut, New Jersey and throughout the country.

The organization was founded to function as the year-round extension for the Real Men Cook® events that were launched in Chicago fifteen years ago and are now presented nationally in leading U.S. cities. Programs under Real Men Charities, Inc, include Real Men Cook Dinner at Daddy's House®, an all-male Sunday dinner that includes sessions where young men can meet and discuss with older men a variety of topics, including education, career options, including careers that involve cooking, foodservice or hospitality, what it means to be a real man, community service and goal setting. Another program is Real Men Cooking With Kids®, which is a fun program involving fresh foods and to easy prepare at home meals, healthy living as well as math and science in cooking. Another is Men's Appreciation Day®, which is a presentation by adult males to young high school and elementary school males, for the purpose of sharing experiences and opportunities for responsible living. Real Men Charities, Inc. is the national not-for-profit organization that presents the Real Men Cook® events. Funds are used to build and continue programs to honor fathers and father figures, to empower families and perpetuate the memory and spirit of Karega Kofi Moyo and Yvette Jackson Moyo, who founded the annual Father's Day event. This is done by the encouragement and promotion of education through voluntary grants, by scholarships or otherwise to individuals, institutions, and organizations.

PAZZAZ works closely and individually with students, helping them believe in themselves and in their ability to succeed. PAZZAZ also works with and teachers to surround children with an environment that fosters and supports progress.

Founded in 1983 by health activist Byllye Y. The organization is gaining the well-earned reputation as the leading force for health for African American women. Black Women's Health Imperative possesses national stature as the only national organization devoted solely to the health of the nation's 19 million Black women and girls.

When it comes to healthcare, the general population guidelines don't always apply to Blacks. The latest research speaks to "Evidence Based Medicine" and how Blacks are different due to such factors as genetics, culture and lifestyle.

Consequently, there needs to be a dedicated website that deals specifically with Black healthy lifestyle issues. Blackdoctor.org is that website.

The Balm In Gilead is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization with an international mission to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS throughout the African Diaspora by building the capacity of faith communities to provide AIDS education and support networks for all people living and affected by HIV/AIDS . The Balm In Gilead's pioneering achievements have enabled thousands of churches to become leaders in preventing HIV by providing comprehensive educational programs and offering compassionate support to encourage those infected to seek and maintain treatment.

The Balm In Gilead, endorsed by over 17 major church denominations, caucuses, and coalitions as well as independent churches, spearheads a dynamic response to the AIDS crisis in the Black community. The Balm In Gilead has established and continues to develop educational and training programs specifically to meet the needs of Black churches that strive to become centers for AIDS ministry, education and compassion.

AmASSI is a non-profit, community based health, wellness and cultural affirmation center. AmASSI is an acronym for the African American Advocacy, Support-Services & Survival Institute. We provide preventive health for HIV/AIDS, STDs, cancer, diabetes, etc., psychological and therapeutic assistance and math and literacy tutoring, skills building opportunities and empowerment. At the AmASSI Center, community members are culturally respected and affirmed, and all services are free and low cost.

AmASSI is an award winning organization that, since 1993, has provided healing to over 10,000 primarily African American and Latino men, women, and children in the South Central Los Angeles neighborhoods of Inglewood, West Adams, Crenshaw, Baldwin Hills, Leimert Park, and Adams-La Brea. Although AmASSI’s programs have a cultural emphasis on African Americans, and a substantial number of Spanish speaking staff, people of other ancestries (e.g., Asian, Native-American and European) often seek AmASSI’s services and are warmly embraced.

Responding to a call from the NAACP in the early '80s decrying the lack of minorities in decision-making positions in the industry, Y.E.S. TO JOBS was created in 1987 to introduce minority high school students to behind-the-scenes career opportunities in the entertainment industry. The Y.E.S. TO JOBS motto, "People Can't Be What They Don't Know Exists," provides the foundation for the program's outreach efforts. Y.E.S. TO JOBS seeks to increase students' awareness early in their career-making process by exposing them to the myriad career opportunities in the entertainment industry, and to develop job skills through hands-on experience behind the scenes. The ground up approach insures candidates are well-trained and prepared for work in the industry.

Frederick Douglass, IV and his wife B.J., founders of The Frederick Douglass Organization (FDO) are dedicated to perpetuating the legacy of Frederick IV's great-great grand father the famed orator, author and statesmen and editor through lecturing and re-enacting speeches and life episodes of his great grandfather Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey Douglass.

    

One of the major thrusts of this organization is to promote financial literacy, bridge the digital divide, promote small businesses, economic development and to save our youth. The On Our Shoulders program was created out of the empathy felt by its founder, Ray Cook, as he watched countless youths die and become victims of violence on the streets of Baltimore.

With the firm belief that faith and free market principles are key to curing poverty, Star Parker founded the Coalition on Urban Renewal & Education (CURE) in 1995 to jump start national dialogue on issues of race and poverty. Parker learned firsthand that the free market can help people more than state subsidies. Before dedicating herself to social activism, she was a single welfare mother in Los Angeles. Although the 1992 Los Angeles riots destroyed her business, the loss fueled her focus on faith-based and free market alternatives to empower the poor.

100 Strong Male Role Models

From the Afro American Newspaper:

100 Strong Male Role Models, an organization with its genesis at Woodlawn High School, which for years scrambled to find its identity, and only in this academic year actually became 100 strong, has not only conquered Woodlawn High, it now wants to go national, all in the space of one academic year. This is a bold move for any organization, but particularly for an organization which is largely lead and regulated by its high school membership.

They are determined to spread the good word about the 100 Strong organization and establish new chapters. Their mission will take them to five states within in a three month period.

The organization was started at Woodlawn High School in 1991 by Joseph Wolfolk, a History Teacher, who believed that remarkable things could happen to turn-around any school if a positive tone and high academic standards were set by a significant number of male students who were developed into role models, specifically 100.

Throughout the year these young men have been engaged in school beautification projects, providing peer mentoring at Woodlawn High and Woodlawn Middle School, food collection drives, providing landscaping services at Benjamin Banneker Museum, marching in parades, and appearing at public speaking engagements.

Moreover, the program has proven its ability to turn many of its members around academically, shifting them from mediocrity to excellence and on the road to college and futures.

Each boy is carefully groomed and monitored by peer members.

Their actions and discipline have gained them the respect of fellow Woodlawn students who recognize them as school leaders.

Etiquette, good manners, courtesy in speech and behavior, self respect and respect for others are all attributes which are emphasized by the organization.

Urban Prep Charter Academy for Young men, located in the Englewood community on Chicago's South Side, is Chicago's first and only charter public school for boys. Founded by a group of African-American education, business and civic leaders, and approved under Chicago Public Schools' Renaissance 2010 program, Urban Prep is part of Chicago’s groundbreaking effort to support innovative new schools that better meet the diverse needs of our city’s youth. Urban Prep’s mission is to provide a high-quality and comprehensive college-preparatory educational experience to young men that results in graduates succeeding in college. It is a direct response to the urgent need to reverse abysmal graduation and college completion rates among young men in urban centers, particularly African-American males. Urban Prep’s tailored curriculum is based on the developmental stages and learning styles of boys as well as the unique challenges facing urban youth. The Urban Prep motto is "We Believe." We believe that our students will shatter negative stereotypes and defy low expectations. We believe that our students can be prepared for and will succeed in college. Baby Steps is designed to teach mostly low-income parents of pre-schoolers how to prepare their children for success in school and in life-- even if the parents themselves never experienced much success in school. Target clients are parents of children from birth to age 5. The program provides resources, training, books and instruction, including home visits during which appropriate intellectual and language development skills are modeled. Baby Steps does not work directly with children but endeavors to reach the children by engaging their parents through workshops, talk sessions, home visits and training seminars run by specialists in early-childhood education.

I believe that all parents, no matter how unsuccessful they might have been in school, want their children to succeed academically. I also believe that they can be taught how to make this possible.
That simple credo is at the heart of the program I have undertaken for the children of Okolona, Mississippi--my birthplace and still my psychic hometown. I call the program Baby Steps, for two reasons. First, it emphasizes the importance of an early start if we are to reverse the trend of educational failure, particularly among minority youth. It must begin with the little ones, the babies, while they are still full of possibilities and have not become associated with failure. Second, though, Baby Steps signals the possibility of longer, sturdier, more self-assured strides later on.

I believe we have the possibility of transforming our town by lifting up its children. And if I am right, there is every reason to believe our successful model can be replicated in communities across America.
But decades of journalism have taught me to be wary of grandiose save-the-world schemes. The important thing, I believe, is to get it right and make it work somewhere before trying to do it everywhere. That’s why we begin with Baby Steps.

I believe we have the possibility of transforming our town by lifting up its children. And if I am right, there is every reason to believe our successful model can be replicated in communities across America.
But decades of journalism have taught me to be wary of grandiose save-the-world schemes. The important thing, I believe, is to get it right and make it work somewhere before trying to do it everywhere. That’s why we begin with Baby Steps.

Black Men Train To Mentor

Black men train today to mentor young males

Professional black men, including doctors, businessmen, athletes, coaches and administrators, will gather starting today at the Westin Hotel downtown to begin a three-day training session on how to mentor and tutor young black males.

The meeting is hosted by the Cincinnati Chapter of 100 Black Men, part of 100 Black Men of America Inc. The group is a voluntary service organization, dedicated to helping black men grow into adulthood and find useful careers, said John Moore, president of the Cincinnati chapter.

"The training forum is one of several that will be held across the country this year to make sure our members understand and use the 100 Black Men training model, designed for urban youths," Moore said.

He said the model deals with instilling self-respect, teaching self-reliance and identifying worth.

Men United for a Better Philadelphia

Men United for a Better Philadelphia (MUBP) is a movement comprised of a group of activists from across the city focused on reducing violence in the City of Philadelphia. Initially motivated by the alarming number of drug-related homicides, the organization will focus as its core mission re-educating men through positive activities. This will be done through a network of support services for men focused on attracting young men away from the type of lifestyles associated with criminal activity.

MUBP believes men must take back the streets and organize at the grass roots level to launch a meaningful attack on negative attitudes that are contributed to the destruction of families and neighborhoods.

Through the group’s work, MUBP is able to identify the needs of men in the community and develop the model to fill in the gaps in services coming to men. The biggest gap identified was the need for a comprehensive plan or model to provide services to men that would build self-esteem, increase positive hopes of the future and decrease the negative perceptions that men sometimes have of themselves

New Light Leadership Coalition (NLLC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is governed and managed for youth, by youth. Our mission is to empower youth through a holistic, peer-centered approach to leadership development by teaching, training, and uniting youth leaders.

Young people in the streets, the schools, the basketball courts, the barber shops, the hair salons, the mall, the PAL Centers, all around the city need to know that there are peer leaders who are concerned about our current condition. NLLC is dedicated to being a part of the solution rather than dwelling on problems of the past. We know that the potential is there for positive change to be made, and we are on the front lines of that change. We hope that the Youth Empowerment Movement will help improve the attitude that young people have about themselves and that adults have about us. NLLC is on the front line of that change. We are one of the few youth-governed organizations that truly seek to empower rather than pacify the warrior spirit in our peers.
