I don't understand all of the commentary about Tim Tebow and his Christian beliefs. Here's what I think is odd.
Ray Lewis is very public about his belief in God and after a big win this season, on national television, he praised God and gave Him the glory.
After becoming saved, Deion Sanders became very outspoken about his conversion and his beliefs.
Darryl Green, the GREAT former corner of the Washington football team, was public about his faith, so much so that he delayed retirement from the league for two years because he wanted to raise more money for his Christian based programs.
Kurt Warner was very public about him being an evangelical Christian.
Randall Cunningham was public about being a Christian.
Now that I think about it, Warner and Cunningham were in one of Kirk Franklin's videos.
Tebow isn't the first, nor will he be the last, so why all of the hype?
Various reasons. None of those you listed had the success he had in college- or even close to it. Three time Heisman contender. Two national titles and almost a third for a high profile program in Florida. One of the most prolific passer in both high school and college football history. Also, none of the above did a prolife commercial that opened themselves up for further controversy. On top of all that he gets doubted every week since he left Florida whether he can even play at all and all the haters constantly make excuses to minimize what he did. And finally, if you buy what Randall Cunningham said, God put Tebow in this position to spread His word.

More...he set some sort of record every time he starts in the NFL. Most comeback from behind to win in fourth quarters and OT in first 11 starts. Longest run for win by qb in last minute of game. Highest qb rating by Denver qb ever in first start. And so on and so on. Not just the records but until the last game at least if he had enough passes he would be in top ten for qb rating, highest for TD to int ratio, and for those with 70 or more rushes he led the league in yards per carry.
Not bad for qb who didn't have any preason, basically a rookie still and who many NFL experts say can't play.
Face it... Him being doubted and bashed like that add to the hype since people root for the underdog.

What you're calling "hype" is a knee-jerk reaction to Tebow's detractors and critics who insist he does not possess the skills required of a starting NFL QB. Some of these critics pooh-pooh the Broncos selection and (now) use of Tebow as a marketing decision; a capitulation of management and coaches to fans. Undoubtedly evangelical Christians are filtering the criticisms through their own biased prism as an attack on the faith and are responding in kind.
