If You Want To Save Marriage
People are rightly upset about the California Supreme Court ruling that it is illegal to disallow gay marriage.
The simple way to resolve this is to get government totally out of marriage. That means no tax privileges for married couples. This means everyone has to go to a lawyer to file papers to provide benefits for spouses.
That solves that problem. Those who want to get married, do so for religious purposes only.
You opine that people are "rightly" upset about the CA court's decision? What makes their anger correct?
I agree a feasible solution would be to end civil marriages. It should be easier then to reform and/or enforce regulations for, say, the insurance industry.

What makes their anger correct to them is that marriage is a religious rite. For some, homosexuality is just wrong.

I remember when we voted on that initiative. I recall thinking then that marriage should be defined as between competent, consenting adults. I still feel that way.

Well... you said they were "rightly upset". I wasn't asking you to explain their feelings; I was asking you to explain yours.
